Tips for your cycling holiday
Carinthia Lakes Loop
Cycling holiday in Austria on the sunny southern side of the Alps. The more than 400-kilometre cycling tour leads in stages along the 20 most beautiful lakes of Carinthia. The Carinthia Lakes Loop is the flagship for all leisure cyclists. As a horizontal figure of eight, the multi-day tour winds along the Carinthian lakes with magnificent views and sights.
In 2023 the tour was expanded with a stage in Central Carinthia with excursion destinations centred on wine and castles. In total, more than 400 kilometres of cycling pleasure and 20 lakes within reach await bikers on the Carinthia Lakes Loop.

Wer Kärnten abseits der klassischen Radwege entdecken möchte, findet bei Gravel Carinthia inspirierende Routen durch sieben Regionen – mit Schotterwegen, stillen Naturplätzen, Kulturmomenten und besonderen „Hidden Trails“ im Süden Österreichs. Über 1.800 Kilometer und 24 kuratierte Gravel-Routen verbinden sportliche Abwechslung mit Landschaft, Geschichte und Genuss.

Bicycles can be taken on all trains. To guarantee bike transport on the MICOTRA trains (express trains), you must reserve a space for your bike. The reservation is free and is booked together with the purchase of the bicycle ticket. You receive your bicycle ticket with the free reservation in the ÖBB ticket shop, in the ÖBB app, from ÖBB customer service at +43 (0)5 1717 and at ÖBB ticket counters.

Road Bike Tour: To the Steineren Hütte in the Görtschitz Valley

This challenging loop starts directly at our doorstep. Where others first have to travel, the adventure begins for you: bike-in, bike-out at Lake Längsee. This tour combines perfect asphalt with crisp climbs and a history-laden backdrop.
Tour highlights

Warm-up at Lake Längsee: We start at the Abbey and enjoy the first kilometres along glittering Lake Längsee. A short stop at Weingut Georgium already offers itself here for a first refreshment or as a motivation target for the return.

Through the heart of Carinthia: Via Althofen the route leads to Guttaring. Pause briefly at the “Field of Stone Lentils” – a place where geology and history become tangible.

The climbing section: After the ride through the Görtschitz valley, things get serious. From Eberstein begins the challenging ascent into the mountains of the Saualpe. Endurance and strength are required here as you gain metre after metre towards the joy of the summit.

The goal in sight: At around 1,500 metres above sea level, you reach the Steinerhütte. You are rewarded with a brilliant panorama and the certainty of having conquered the region’s king stage.

Descent & roll-out: A rapid descent to Brückl follows. The last kilometres lead relaxed along the Gurk river and via St. Veit back to Abbey St. Georgen, where the well-deserved recovery in our gardens awaits you.
Road Bike Tour: Flattnitz Loop

This challenging tour takes you from the idyllic Lake Längsee deep into Carinthia’s mountain world. As a guest of our house, you enjoy the exclusive advantage of “bike-in, bike-out”: you swing into the saddle directly in front of the Abbey portal and leave everyday life behind.

- The ascent to the Flattnitz: From St. Veit the route leads steadily uphill into the Gurktal Alps. The Flattnitz (1,400 m) rewards you with alpine freshness and an impressive panorama, before the rapid descent.
- Scenic pleasure: Experience the pristine nature of Central Carinthia, past historic castles and through dense forests – a route that is both sportingly demanding and invigorating for the senses.
- Perfect finish: After returning to the Abbey, the ultimate reward awaits. A jump into our own Abbey Lido lake or a regenerative session in the Abbey sauna quickly makes tired legs forgotten.

This tour promises not only top sporting performance but also one of the country’s most beautiful views. Starting directly from the Abbey, you head southeast to climb one of Austria’s sunniest spots: the mountain village of Diex.

- Diex – the box seat: The climb to Diex is legendary. Located on a sun-drenched high plateau, the village with its characteristic fortified churches offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the Klagenfurt basin all the way to the Karawanks.
