1,000 years ago…
Stift St. Georgen am Längsee was founded. The noble couple Otwin and Wichpurg decreed at the time that a Benedictine convent should be established here, and their daughter Hiltipurg became the first abbess. To mark this, we celebrated our 1,000th anniversary in 2003. For almost 800 years, Benedictine nuns lived and worked here, and the appearance of the abbey today still bears witness to that time. Under Emperor Joseph II, the convent was dissolved in 1782 and acquired by the Counts Egger. The counts kept their residence here and later operated a castle hotel — at that time, what is today the Abbey Pool was already in use. In 1934, the Mariannhill Missionaries took over the building and ran a training facility here. During the Second World War, the “castle” became a military hospital and afterwards a lung sanatorium. On 10 September 1959, the building was acquired by the Diocese of Gurk and two schools with a boarding house were founded. From 1960 onwards, many courses and lectures were offered here as part of the educational centre. After the schools were closed, the hotel and gastronomy were continually expanded and in recent years have evolved into today’s Stiftshotel. Stift St. Georgen is a special place, made unique by its location and history.
