Ideas for Your Supporting Programme

Abbey Gardens

The Abbey Gardens are managed in a climate-friendly way and in harmony with nature. Herbs, flowers, fruit and vegetables are harvested and processed further in our kitchen.

The Herb Spiral
Carinthia’s largest herb spiral is a three-dimensional, spiral-shaped rock garden and entices with scents of herbs and spices.

The Orchards
The oldest existing part of the garden with tall-stemmed, large-crowned fruit trees invites you to stroll, relax and linger.

The Stone Arena
Built from diabase natural-stone blocks and framed by wild-shrub hedges, it is available to interested parties, by arrangement with us, as a performance venue for events.

Outdoor Chess
Enjoy the silence with a game of chess. A game for young and old where you can prove your strategic skill.

The Lavender Labyrinth
The labyrinth is built from earth, wood and stones and planted with fragrant lavender. The path through the labyrinth takes place in three steps: the way in stands for self-knowledge, the centre for the experience of knowing God, and on the way back this experience is translated into one’s own life.

All garden areas are publicly accessible year-round.

We will gladly organize guided tours through the Abbey Gardens and the Path of Orientation for you.

Abbey Church

Abbey St. Georgen on Lake Längsee has a more than 1,000-year-old history. It has always been an important spiritual and social centre. Today, Abbey St. Georgen is owned by the Diocese of Gurk. The picturesque hilltop Abbey delights visitors above all with the Abbey Church and the in-house chapel.

Of the former oldest convent for women in Carinthia, founded in the 11th century, apart from
remains of Romanesque wall substance, only a few witnesses are preserved. Next to the gate entrance in the courtyard, an
ornamental stone walled in from the 11th or 12th century can be seen. Of particular interest is the small founder’s tablet from around 1250, which on one side shows the heads of the founder couple and the abbess Hiltiburg with God’s blessing hand, and on the other side bears the following explanatory inscription: Here lies the body of the venerable Wichburg, wife of Count Otwin, and her daughter Hiltiburg, this convent’s first abbess.

The impressive Abbey St. Georgen on Lake Längsee has many corners where there is much to discover. On our
historic Abbey tour, you will learn even more interesting things about the past and current events at the Abbey.

We will gladly organize guided tours with our Dean DDr. Stromberger for your group.
For groups staying overnight at the Abbey from 40 people, an Abbey tour is included free of charge.
